Abstract

Who is Claude Aveline? This nearly forgotten writer was a great humanist and excellent publisher of art works in the 1920s. He left a beautiful catalogue of books on wove or laid paper, by the most important writers of his time, from Gide to Valéry and Martin du Gard, among others. An archive housed at Versailles allows us to get a better idea of his career in the world of luxury and semi-luxury. What do those yet unpublished papers tell us? That this publisher was engaged in a double context of rough competition and economical difficulties even before the depression of 1929…
